Leonard Parker (1889 – 1917), a carpenter, born at Bambra, the son of George and Eliza Parker, enlisted in Geelong on 14 July 1915 as a married man. He was attached to the 29th Battalion which embarked for Egypt aboard the HMAT Ballarat on 22 March 1916, six months before his son was born. After some training in England Leonard arrived in France on 23 June 1916. The 29th Battalion fought its first major battle at Fromelles on 19 July 1916. The nature of this battle was summed up by one 29th soldier: “the novelty of being a soldier wore off in about five seconds, it was like a bloody butcher’s shop”.
On 23 Dec 1916 while the battalion was training at Dernancourt, Leonard was promoted to Lance Corporal. Six months later he attended the 5th Division gas school for a week before returning to his unit at Senlis.
In early 1917, the German Army withdrew to the Hindenburg Line, allowing the British front to be advanced. The Germans, however, made selected stands to delay this advance and the 29th Battalion was involved in defeating a counter-attack at Beaumetz on 23 March. They occupied the line from Velu to Bapaume Road. The enemy counter attacked the outpost lines in waves but the battalion held its position. The battalion subsequently missed the heavy fighting to breach the Hindenburg Line during the second battle of Bullecourt as the 8th Brigade was deployed to protect the Division’s flank. The next big battle for Leonard and the 29th battalion was that of Polygon Wood.
They were training at Blaringhem, France (46km south east of Ypres).when they were ordered to head for Ypres. They marched 23km to Steenvoorde. Continuing their daily march the 29th battalion arrived just south of Ypres on 24 September. Early evening the next day they were ordered to move to Hooge immediately. They marched all night arriving at 4.25am encountering heavy bombardment of gas shells while settling in at the tape line. At 5.50am the battalion attacked enemy positions at Polygon Wood, taking the first objective but finding that the brigades on their flanks had not proceeded preventing the 29th battalion from continuing on. At noon they advanced to the final objective achieving that by 1pm. There were enemy counter attacks for the rest of the day which were easily repulsed. Leonard was one of 42 men from the battalion killed in this operation, on 26 September, four of those were from the Surf Coast Shire. He is buried in the vicinity of Polygon Wood and remembered on the memorial there.
